Historically Trezor devices avoided secure elements (using a general microcontroller for full transparency), but that made them theoretically vulnerable to physical extraction attacks. The Safe 3 adds an EAL6+ secure element to guard the PIN and seed, while keeping the firmware open and verifiable.
It's a wired USB-C device with a small screen and two buttons. Keys are stored on the device, transactions are signed on-device, and you confirm on the screen — the standard model, executed by one of the oldest and most trusted names in the space. The honest trade-offs: the screen and buttons are basic compared with touchscreen flagships, and it's wired-only with no camera or air-gap.
